Elissa Janowitz

Elissa Janowitz was born and raised in Larchmont, New York. She moved to Pennsylvania for college, where she graduated Muhlenberg College, Magna Cum Laude. There she received her B.A. in American Studies, as well as her Pennsylvania State teaching certificate in Elementary Education. Upon returning to New York, Elissa received her New York State Teaching Certificate. She then attended graduate school at Columbia Teachers College, earning her Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist and her New York State Certification in Teacher of Literacy.

Elissa has always been passionate about working with children. Beginning at an early age, Elissa tutored, babysat, and spent her summers as a camp counselor. While at Teachers College, Elissa trained as a Reading Specialist at the Dean Hope Center for Educational and Psychological Services where she worked with individual clients to assess and improve their reading and writing skills. After completing her Master’s Degree, she taught kindergarten at Harlem Success Academy 4.

In 2012, Elissa began teaching at PS 277, a public school in the South Bronx, where after three years of hard work, she received tenure. Elissa was not only a lead first grade teacher, but she was also on the hiring committee and professional development committee while at PS 277. As a member of these committees, Elissa assisted the administration in the hiring process, as well as collaborated with administration and grade team leaders to facilitate professional development for the staff based on school goals and teacher feedback. Her work at PS 277 was extremely rewarding, but she was thrilled to join the PS 527 team in September 2016.

Inspired by her own childhood teachers, Elissa believes in creating a learning environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. As a teacher, Elissa provides instruction that is designed with a diverse group of students’ interests and needs in mind. Elissa is excited to establish meaningful relationships with her students, families and staff!
