Katie Kelley
Katie Kelley is excited to bring over a decade of experience to PS 527. Originally from Long Island, Katie also lived in New Hampshire before moving to Manhattan as a teenager and attending Riverdale Country School. For college, Katie attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in Art History. Her years in Wisconsin have made her a Badger through and through. Upon returning to NYC after graduation, Katie worked at a production company for a couple years before deciding to pursue her love of teaching. Katie then enrolled in Hunter College for a Masters in Childhood Education, while working as an assistant at the Anderson School. During that time, Katie subbed all over the city and was able to see a range of classrooms and schools. In the fall of 2006, Katie joined the staff of the Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars and continued to teach there for eight wonderful years. She loved working with excellent colleagues, meeting great families and children, and all the professional development she received. While working at TAG, Katie became involved in the roll-out of the Common Core Standards and was fortunate enough to attend Professional Development with the originators of Common Core Math. Here, Katie worked on her passion for creating curriculum and wrote a math unit on fractions that was published by the New York City Department of Education. At the same time, Katie worked to complete her license in Administration and Supervision, with guidance and internship hours with Principal Dan. After a visit to Katie’s model classroom by Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Walcott during the 2013-2014 school year, Katie took some time to focus on the other love in her life, her children. Today, Katie lives in Croton on Hudson, New York and has three children. Quinn is 7 years old and is in 2nd grade and Phoenix and Juliette are 4½ year-old twins. Teaching at PS 527 is a dream Katie has had for many years, from when she attended the first planning sessions during the inaugural school year. She is so excited to bring what she learns from being a mom back to the classroom to have another phenomenal year celebrating the final grade at PS 527.
