Marnie Bernstein

Marnie grew up in Brooklyn, New York, a proud product of the public-school system. Her summers were happily spent at Silver Gull Beach Club where she got her first job as a day camp counselor, and discovered a love for working with children. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at SUNY Albany, followed by a Master’s degree in Education from Hunter College.

Residing on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Marnie joined the staff of educators at the Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars in East Harlem in 2000. This very diverse school for gifted learners afforded her the opportunity to guide fourth graders towards reaching their potential.

In 2006, Marnie moved to a science cluster position at TAG, beginning with students in grades 2-5. The program then expanded to all elementary students from kindergarten to fifth grade, where Marnie and her students enjoyed the open-ended inquiry method of learning and discovery until the spring of 2017.

Marnie strives to create an environment where students know their ideas and questions are encouraged, as they work both independently and collaboratively. The classroom should be a safe space where effort is valued as much as success in an ongoing process to gain insight and understanding into the world around us.

Marnie enjoys spending her summers alternating between day camp and travel. Since 2000, she has embraced the role of head counselor for groups of girls entering third and fourth grade at Camp Ramaquois in Pomona, NY and is switching to the Arts and Crafts specialty area for summer 2017.

Every other summer, Marnie spends July in Australia visiting with her sister and nieces. From Sydney to Brisbane, she has hiked trails through rainforests and recently tested her more adventurous side and found a love for abseiling a.k.a. repelling down cliffs. Marnie has also competed in several 5K races through New York City, raising donations for various local charities.

After 18 years at the same school, Marnie joined PS 527 in September 2017 and looks forward to working with the students, families, and staff for the 2018-2019 school year.
