Morgan DeTura
Second Grade Teacher
Morgan DeTura
Morgan Nicole DeTura was born and raised in a rural town in New Jersey. As a high school student, she dreamed of teaching in New York. Morgan began volunteering and over the course of six years transitioned into a Teacher’s Assistant in an extended summer school program for students with learning disabilities. This experience fostered her love of children and was the influence and motivation Morgan needed to pursue a career in education. Morgan attended Gettysburg College where she obtained her BA in English. While at Gettysburg, Morgan began playing Women’s Rugby and continued the Track career she had begun in high school. Her coaches there reminded her how much passion can influence performance, something she keeps in mind when teaching her students. Morgan’s love for running continues to grow and has led to multiple half marathons, and full marathons in Washington, DC, as well as, fulfilling a bucket list item of running the NYC Marathon in 2015 (highlighted by running a personal best and a cheering section full of PS 527 faces). Upon graduating from Gettysburg, Morgan attended Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ where she worked year-round to receive dual certification in Elementary General Education and K-12 Special Education. While pursuing her certification she got her first teaching job with 4 and 5 year olds at Foundations Preschool in Annandale, NJ. Morgan’s dream of working in NYC came true when she received an offer from The Gillen Brewer School on the Upper East Side. While at GBS, Morgan worked their 12-month program as an Assistant Teacher in classrooms from Pre-K to 2nd grade, before becoming a Lead Teacher in Kindergarten. In her last year at GBS Morgan attended the Bank Street College for Education where she received her Master's of Science in Early Childhood Special Education. All of this led to her start at PS 527 in September 2013. Morgan believes in continuous learning, which she in turn translates into highly creative, interactive and personalized programs for her students at PS 527. She strives to uphold the goals of the school, educating the individual with differentiated instruction, working with a child’s interests to motivate and offer experiences that can help solidify their learning. Morgan feels so lucky to not only work with the students, but to collaborate and learn from a dedicated and diverse staff that come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Morgan recently received her School Building Leader (SBL) certificate from the College of St. Rose, in hopes of pursuing a future career in school leadership. She understands that by revisiting their own learning, the teachers are able to create a classroom environment where both students and staff can grow, learn and be successful both in the school and surrounding community. Morgan is thrilled to continue to learn from and alongside both staff and students as she enters her sixth year at PS 527 working with a phenomenal second grade team.
