Third Grade Teacher
Nicole Silva

Nicole grew up in nearby Scarsdale, New York.  Ever since she was a teenager, Nicole loved working with children, either through tutoring, babysitting or teaching swim lessons.  She knew she was destined to teach.

After completing her B.A. from Barnard College, Nicole began her teaching career as an Assistant at The Buckley School on the Upper East Side.  She stayed at the all-boys school for two years, learning how to create challenging lessons and collaborate with others in a rigorous school environment.

In 2006, Nicole earned her Master’s in Elementary Education from Teachers College - Columbia University.   In the literacy program, Nicole took on the challenge of learning and implementing best teaching practices in reading and writing.  Upon graduating, she was hired to teach fourth grade at PS 6, where she stayed for seven wonderful years.  As a head teacher, she worked with children to develop a growth mindset in all academic areas, seeing themselves as resilient learners who always reach for what is next.  Through assessment, small group work, and individual goalsetting, she encouraged students to attain higher goals.  Nicole also ran weekly service learning groups with grades 3-5, and she organized overnight field trips for the fourth graders.  Being a teacher means being part of the school community.

In 2013, Nicole moved to San Francisco with her husband.  For four years, she taught third grade at The Hamlin School, an all-girls independent school.  San Francisco opened up a whole new world to Nicole, teaching her how to use educational apps to engage students and bring learning to the 21st Century.  The students in her class incorporated technology with reading, writing, math and social studies in innovative ways.

Nicole is excited for her second year at PS 527.  She cannot wait to meet her new class and to get to know the strengths of each individual student.
